These used an early version of a lenticular lens. The first commercial lenticular products were patented and marketed in 1906 as “Puzzle Post Card” or “Photochange Post Card”. The technology to create a lenticular picture was available by the late 19th and early 20th century. As a result, the picture would appear to change as a person walked by, creating a primitive type of flip picture. They were made by dividing 2 images into strips and viewing them through a slotted barrier. The idea of an image that changes when viewed from different angles was known as “tabula scalata” or “turning pictures”.
